HOW YOU CAN HELP NORTH BAY FIRE VICTIMS

As many of you know, we are in the midst of the devastating North Bay Fires. It has been our biggest nightmare here in Wine Country as our brave first responders continue to battle multiple fires which have now burned over 190,000 acres. 25,000 people have been evacuated and as of today there have been 31 deaths. It has been an unbelievable past few days, truly heartbreaking.

I want to extend a huge thank you to all of your outpouring of love and support and for checking in on my family in Sonoma. I am currently in San Francisco, but my parents are sticking it out in Sonoma as our home is in the center of town away from harm (for now). We are trying to stay as positive as humanly possible as our brave firefighters try to contain these wildfires that have caused so much devastation already.

Its been a very hard last few days for many and unfortunately its not over. The fires are moving, its the most terrifying feeling and I’m sure many are experiencing the same. All we have left to do is pray that we can get this under control soon.

A lot of you have messaged me on how you can help. Right now, the evacuation centers don’t need anymore supplies as they are completely full (which makes me so happy to hear). They do need money and resources for the future as this will be a long road for many. Below are a few ways to donate:

  • Airbnb has launched its Open Homes program for those seeking shelter free-of-charge at a residence outside of but near the affected area. The company is also looking for those willing to volunteer space at their local home for evacuees.
  • You can donate to the Red Cross, which helps distribute disaster relief aid. In addition to online donations, you can also call  1-800 RED CROSS or text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
  • Jake Kloberdanz, a local winery owner, also started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for fire and rescue organizations.
  • GoFundMe has put together a centralized location for all the fundraising campaigns supporting relief efforts here.
  • The Napa Valley Community Disaster Relief Fund is collecting cash donations here.
  • Donate to food pantries: Redwood Empire Food BankFood pantries of Napa County,  and Food pantries of Sonoma County.
  • Donate to local animal shelters, which are helping people keep their pets safe. Humane Society of Sonoma County: sonomahumane.org, Humane Society of Napa County: napahumane.org,
  • Last but certainly not least is a personal one for me. My close friend Pauline and her family lost everything. Please help them recover. Here is their go-fund me page.

Most of all THANK YOU TO OUR FIRST RESPONDERS FOR YOUR TIRELESS EFFORTS!

Please keep Sonoma and Napa Counties in your thoughts, we need it more then ever. xo

WHY YOU NEED TO USE A FOAM ROLLER

Ok were switching gears and talking fitness today! I just ran the Napa to Sonoma Half Marathon followed by the Giant Race Half Marathon a few weekends ago which was a total blast. Standard Jenna, I left training to the last minute and ran a ton of miles the last 2 weeks before the race. With all of the training and extra stress on the body its SUPER important to stretch, get a massage and FOAM ROLL.

While necessary to work hard during your workouts, it’s equally as important to make sure your body gets the recovery it needs. And while getting a massage every once in a while is a great way to treat yourself and soothe sore muscles, foam rolling is a much more time efficient way to recover on a daily basis.

Foam roller exercises, also called myofascial release, is a form of massage that you can do either before exercise to loosen up sore muscles and tight joints, or after a workout, in an effort to help with muscle recovery. I strongly believe foam rolling is ESSENTIAL after excess training, especially during half or full marathon training (or just everyday exercise!)

WHY YOU NEED TO USE A FOAM ROLLER:

Reduce soreness

Foam rolling works by massaging away fascia buildup in your muscles, which often lead to painful, sore muscles. Reducing this means you won’t have to skip your workout because you’re too sore from the previous day’s session. I like to foam roll right after a workout but the day after will do as well!

Increase mobility and flexibility

Taking proper care of underlying fascia is a secret weapon to improving mobility, flexibility, and range of motion. There are so many different ways to stretch, but I love using a foam roller to release tension and increase flexibility.

Helps De-stress

Foam rolling is basically a self massage. I usually get monthly deep tissue massages to help release tension and de-stress but this is a much more affordable way! When you release your knots and sore spots, the tension built up in your connective tissue releases and leaves you feeling less stressed.

A few tips that are important to consider:

Avoid foam rolling directly on an injured area. When it comes to foam rolling and myofascial release, constantly working the area of pain could create more inflammation and tension in the area, further tensing the muscles and fascia. Also, where you feel the pain is not always the source of the injury. Instead focus on the muscles attached to the area that injured- they could be the culprit.

Foam rolling hurts, and when I come to an area that is uncomfortable I tend to speed up. However foam rolling quickly doesnt help release fascia. Releasing fascia takes time, so slow your roll. 🙂

Foam rolling is a lot of work and I sometimes break a sweat. Although its easy to let our form deteriorate especially after a hard workout, its important to keep good form and posture. Your pelvis might drop from not having tight abs when doing quad work or your hips my sag while working the IT band. This can cause extra stress on existing injuries, so make sure you have enough energy to focus on posture.

I’m not going to lie….it hurts, but it is worth it, so hang in there, and notice how much better you feel when foam rolling becomes a consistent part of your recovery plan.

An over-sized off the shoulder is the perfect sweater for Fall. The sweater I’m wearing is from last season, but there are so many dupes! This and this are my favorite off the shoulders that I’ve found lately. I am also IN LOVE with bell sleeves. This one (under $40!) and this one are in my cart! This is a must have for fall, and I love the color of this long cardigan which I just snagged from Nordstom.

I’ve gotten a lot of questions about these jeans on my insta. They were distressed on the knees when I purchased but I actually cut the bottoms so that they are cropped with a raw hem. I love that look! Here are a few other denim options I’m loving:

And ALLLLL the sweaters right now are SO good. Below are my favorites to get you girls ready for the season…
