Designer Whey Product Review & Giveaway

Sponsored Post/Product Review: Although this post is sponsored by Designer Whey, all opinions are my own.

Hey guys! I had the opportunity to try some new product which I wanted to share with you all. I have dabbled in all sorts of protein powders but have yet to find a favorite. Designer whey is definitely at the top of my list, along with Optimum Nutrition and Cellucor. Here is what I tried from Designer Whey:

French Vanilla powder: (mixed with almond milk) This is my favorite. It’s not too thick and the vanilla flavoring is super tasty. Each scoop is 100 calories and 18 grams of protein. Most other powders are more calories, and also more protein content, but this is a great lighter shake. If you are in the “cutting phase” or lower calories fit into your macros, this is the way to go. Still has enough protein, but only at 100 cals.

Gourmet Chocolate powder: Same 100 cals/18g protein. The chocolate isnt over powering, but a subtle flavor. Also very light. The powder mixes better than any other whey powders I’ve tried.

Luscious strawberry powder: I’m not a big strawberry fan, but this wasn’t too bad. I definitely recommend mixing all with milk as they are lighter shakes and are much more filling with milk rather than water.

Also a huge fan of the ready to drink shakes. Same calorie and protein content as the powder. I love the fact that I can just throw them in my bag and go. For someone who’s always on the go like myself, this is ideal.

Triple Chocolate crunch and peanut butter crunch protein bars: These are both equally delish. Not bad on the calorie front, at about 160 calories per bar. These are much healthier than others I’ve seen on the market. Such a yummy replacement for a chocolate bar or piece of candy. I will be buying these again.

So why drink whey?

With so much information and so many different protein sources, it can be hard to determine what is accurate and what you should take.

It all starts with you.  Your body has different needs for different situations.  With a regular, well-balanced diet, you are already getting a good amount of protein from many of the foods you eat.  But with our multitasking, hectic schedules, and workouts, your body needs additional protein to recover and, depending on your workouts, build muscle.

That’s where whey comes in:
• Whey is pure so your body quickly absorbs it for maximum post-workout recovery and nutrition.
• Whey is a “complete” lean protein with the right balance of amino acids and protein to help your immune system. (source)

Whey is a VERY important factor when trying to reach any fitness goal. Whey is a powerful muscle builder, and also aids in weight loss. It’s one of the first supplements you should consider when starting a muscle-building or fat-loss goal. Here is a great article if you’d like to read more about the benefits of whey.

Another really cool thing about Designer Whey is that they have a long list of protein recipes on their website. You know me, I love trying new protein recipes. Protein powder isnt just for drinking these days, but can be put in pretty much any recipe!

A Note of Encouragement

Dear you, (the newly committed gym-goer)

I saw you walk into the gym yesterday for the very first time. I could tell that you were scared, confused and were looking for some guidance. It’s an intimidating place if you are not familiar! Maybe you will read this and not feel as discouraged and know that there are others out there feeling the way you do. I’m sure you were afraid to ask anyone for help, but just know, there are people out there willing to help and guide you.

I know firsthand how scary it is to walk into the gym for the very first time, especially the weight room. The weight room is full of guys, just waiting for a girl to walk in to give them something to look at. Sweating, grunting guys that know the weight room like the back of their hand. Not the most inviting place, right? The day I decided to start lifting I wandered around like a lost puppy, not knowing what to do next. Trying to remember the exercises that I saw in the magazines or from the workout dvds I would do in my room. The nerves started to get to me, as every guy would look over to see what I was doing. Ok, so the staring never goes away, but the more you step foot in the gym, the more confidence you will have I promise! So after a week or so, I was getting the hang of this whole weight room thing. No more cardio bunny for me! I wrote down my workouts in my phone, so I was prepared. Kept track of the weights I was using so I could progress each time. Let me tell you, I am so thankful that I kept at it and didn’t let the weight room scare me away. Lifting has changed my life and I wouldn’t be the person I am today without it. Sounds so cheesy I know, but I have truly learned so much about myself and what my mind and body are truly capable of. Oh and ps- lifting WILL NOT make you “bulky”. (More about that another time.)

Anyways, it will get easier, trust me! As time goes on, you will start to watch others do different exercises and learn from people that are working out beside you. You will become familiar with where each piece of equipment is and no longer wander around looking for it. The learning cycle never ends, because I still love finding new workouts to do from bodybuilding.com, different blogs and social media etc. But please please please don’t give up after just a few sessions. The gym is foreign territory now, but won’t be for long. Pretty soon you will walk in there like you own the place. Your body will transform if you work your butt off. You will soon have more confidence and you never know, you may be that confident girl that can wear tight spandex shorts or a sports bra and not feel self conscious. It is the best feeling in the world once you get there. One of the many reasons why I work out is to feel my best and most confident self. For you and everyone that is scared to walk into the weight room, I dare you to do it. Step outside of your comfort zone and own it. You won’t regret facing your fears and stepping into a whole new world that may change your life as it did mine.

Lots of love, Jenna

Weekend Finds

Hope you all had a great weekend! I wanted to share a few weekend finds with you all. First off, we found a fantastic Italian Restaurant in the Mission (of all places). We rarely get to the mission, but when we do we usually find some great food. Farina had such a cool ambiance and the food was to die for! I got the halibut with veggies and potatoes on the side. Finding something on the menu that is rather healthy can be a challenge sometimes, but best thing to do is to order fish or chicken and ask for extra veggies on the side. Avoid the word “fried” and opt for the word “grilled”. I also had a taste of the pasta and that was phenomenal as well. The service was so-so, but food and company was worth it.

meal

I forgot to mention, we ran 16 miles before this meal, so we were looking forward to food! And also a glass of wine or 2. 🙂

On Saturday I had the opportunity to volunteer at the “Princess Project“, which is  a foundation that provides free prom dresses and accessories to teens that might not otherwise be able to afford a dress. What an experience. Helping young girls find a dress that makes them feel beautiful is an experience that I will never forget. So happy to be able to spend time helping those who need it and make them feel comfortable in their own skin. The Princess Project really focuses on celebrating bodies of all shapes and sizes and doing whatever it takes to make young girls feel like a princess on their prom night. Looking forward to volunteering each year and donating dresses. Here is their website if you’re interested in more information.

Last but not least, Sunday morning was spent at Project Zen, getting a much needed deep tissue massage. I love this place!! With all the exercise and running, its so important to get a massage once in awhile. My body was in rough shape from the Saturday training run. I’ve been seeing a physical therapist for runners knee and IT band issues, but sadly haven’t been seeing much progress. The run tested my physical ability and was very close to giving up. Post massage, feeling much better and plan to give my body a rest from running for a few days. Fingers crossed all is well for the big day in 2+ weeks. Key learning experience: listen to your body!!

How was your weekend? How often do you get massages?

Hope you all are having a great week so far! I wanted to share with you some news about an awesome platform that is coming to the US . Since we love to raise money for different causes by running or taking part in fitness activities, I thought this was very fitting. The everydayhero platform is transforming the giving experience by offering people a way to track and see all the good they do for causes they are passionate about. The platform not only allows people to raise and donate money to nonprofits, but it takes the notion of giving a step further. It allows users to raise money and track their Giving Footprint to measure, monitor and amplify everything they put forth when giving to a cause.

Here is how it works:
