Hope you are all having a great week! We are off to Mexico tomorrow to celebrate my birthday (big 2.9!) but wanted to share a really cool experience that I had a few weeks ago!
Have you ever been to a float spa? My brother gave Jeff and I a gift card to Reboot Float Spa here in San Francisco so we decided to give it a shot. You may have heard of it, as many celebs including Steph Curry & Harrison Barnes have frequented. Here is the video that went viral.
Floating in a mixture of super saturated epsom salt and water gives you the sensation of gravity, decompresses the spine and puts you into almost an instant state of relaxation. It calms the mind and is said to heal stress, lack of sleep, workouts, jetlag etc. It can also provide chronic pain relief which is why athletes regularly float.
We walked into the spa, took off our shoes and instantly felt relaxed like most spas. We watched a video showing us the do’s, dont’s and giving us options for our float. We were given quite a few pointers to help us relax and get the most of the experience. We were then walked to our own rooms and given extensive instruction to shower, shampoo, condition, remove makeup etc. Then it was time to float! I hopped in, pulled down the lid of the machine and the music started.
For the first 10 mins of the 60 min session the lights and relaxing music are on and the rest of the session is in silence. You have the option to turn the light on or off as well as get in and out as you please. I was afraid I would get bored laying there for an hour, but they gave me tips on how to relax which worked! I didn’t fall asleep but it’s almost like your body is asleep while your mind is awake.
<these are what the pods look like, crazy huh?!>
Overall, I really enjoyed my session! I have a hard time relaxing and this was a perfect solution to get rid of stress. Not only that, but I could see how a few sessions could help with pain relief. Jeff on the other hand had a harder time relaxing. He was pretty hot, but he was also not instructed to open the lid for some air. I also thought I would be claustrophobic, but that didn’t really cross my mind while I was inside the pod. My mind wandered for the first 20 mins, but given the breathing technique they share I was completely relaxed after that short time.
Once your session is complete, you can shower and you are ready to go! I would suggest floating in the evening so that you can just go home and go to sleep. I would highly recommend a session to those of you who are curious!
According to Reboot, here are the top 5 reasons to float:
- Reboot your health. Floating lowers stress hormones, replenishes neurotransmitters, and releases endorphins, which induces ultra-deep relaxation and provides a zen-like afterglow that can last for days.
- Re-charge your energy. The womb-like environment provides a euphoric boost in energy, which is ideal for when we’re jet lagged, sleep deprived, or drained from a long work-week.
- Recenter your mind. Effortlessly slip into meditative states, which has a plethora of proven benefits. You’ll feel intensely awake, yet extremely relaxed and clear-headed.
- Release from gravity. Floating will release tension stored in muscles and decompress the spine, which is both soothing and effectively relieves chronic pain.
- Recover from urban lifestyle. Greatly accelerate the body’s ability to heal itself from the effects of stress, intense workouts, late-nights, and overstimulation.
What are you thoughts around float spa’s like Reboot? Are you willing to give it a shot?
