Happy Monday! This weekend we ventured (not far) into The Presidio for a hike. What we thought would be a quick walk turned into a 4 hour hike exploring different areas of the Presidio here in San Francisco. Jeff was wearing flip flops which really says a lot about us being prepared! It’s always so exciting for us to get outside and explore. I’m always looking to stay active on the weekends so the idea of a hike was exactly what I had in mind.
The Presidio was an army post for over 200 years so there’s many old military buildings and landmarks, forests, neighboring beaches and even a military cemetery. We drive in and around this area all the time, but it’s nice to get out of the car and “get lost”. There are 12 different trails in the area and several scenic overlooks. There’s something about viewing the city from an overlook after you’ve hiked to the top. The fresh air, the workout, the views, it’s pretty magical. If you are visiting San Francisco or have yet to explore The Presidio I highly recommend it! Also great for trail runners and bikers.
I also wanted to share a few other trails in San Francisco which are worth checking out:
- Mount Davidson: The tallest hill in the city! Several trails criss-cross the hill offering views of twin peaks and the city.
- Lands End: 3.4 miles roundtrip with Golden Gate Bridge views. Also check out the Sutro Baths and the rock labyrinth, wander up to the Legion of Honor, or head all the way from the Lands End Lookout to Eagles Point near Sea Cliff.
- Batteries to Bluffs Trail: From the Lands Ends trail you can head down to Baker Beach, then along the coastline. Gorgeous views the entire way!
- Fort Funston: Offers steep trails down to the beach and can be combined with a trip to Lake Merced.
- Stow Lake and Strawberry Hill: The highest part of Golden Gate park with views of Downtown SF, Golden Gate Bridge and Marin.
- Muir Woods: Kind of a must-do if you’re visiting. It is a tourist mecca but the redwoods are gorgeous! Located in Marin, it takes about 40 mins to get there from the city and I would suggest you get there early. Once you park, you can loose the crowds as there are many different trails to choose from.
Have you had the chance to hike any of these? Which are your favorite?
