My First Full Marathon!!!

I still can’t believe it. If you follow me on Facebook, I’m sure you’ve heard the news, but for those who haven’t, I completed my first full marathon this weekend at The Wipro San Francisco Marathon! It’s kind of a funny story, and definitely did not imagine my first marathon to happen like this. So here’s how it went.

Believe it or not, I went to the race with the thought of running the half. I had a full marathon bib, but havent trained and was definitely planning to wing it. A friend of mine has been training like crazy for her first full, and I got a couple of runs in with her but had no intention of running the full 26! At mile 2 I told her, “Wouldnt that be crazy if I ran the full with you?” Crazy, it was! When we approached mile 13 if was feeling great and she turned to me and said “so….what are you going to do.” I honestly didn’t even think about it, I went for it! Most everyone would want to be finished at mile 13, right? I’m not going to lie, when I saw the half finish line it was hard! But I knew I could do this, I knew I could finish the full and how amazing it would be if i did.

I couldn’t have asked for a better cheerleader by my side. My friend, Luba stuck by my side the entire run. She was motivating me like crazy, talking to me the whole time, telling me not to give up. I never doubted her, but by mile 20 my body was definitely taking a hit. It was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life! But I knew I had to finish, there was no other option. By the last mile, I was dragging but it was amazing to hear so many runners rooting me on, telling me we were almost done.

Although it was by no means easy, it was also one of my biggest accomplishments. I still can’t believe that I completed my first Full marathon with no training! It was an emotional experience. By the last mile I couldn’t hold back the tears. The feeling was unexplainable.

I wouldn’t recommend that anyone else try this, but I do recommend you train and go for it! My mind and heart literally took over my body and I accomplished something that I never thought I could. It’s so important to listen to your body and what it is telling you. The only reason why I went ahead with it is because I knew that I could make it. I knew my body could handle the pressure. All the strength training I do is what came in handy. My heart was telling me yes. So I went for it. Push your body, but know your limits. Train, train, train so you are not as sore as I am today!!

I will post later about post-marathon recovery, as it’s one of the most important parts. I am the most sore I have ever been before, so now its time to take care of my body and replenish all the nutrients I lost during the 4 hours and 46 minutes of running. The soreness will fade but the awesome story will last forever.

Congrats to all my fellow runners! You can finally say “I did it. I never gave up. I never quit.” Those moments of pain turned into memories and an accomplished goal that only 1% of the population could obtain. This was the world’s 15th hardest marathon course! You did it! Now you can thank yourself for the rest of your life. It’s truly a life changing moment.

What I Ate Wednesday

Super excited to participate in my first “What I ate Wednesday” or “WIAW” link up, hosted by the fab Jenn at Peas and Crayons! Loving this idea to give you guys a bit of background on what I eat throughout my day, but also keep a diary, notice my slip ups, successes and patterns. May give you some ideas, may put a disgusting look on your face, may inspire  you to try something new…you decide. 🙂

“WIAW is about food and fun! It’s about making new friends, breaking out of a food rut, noting changes in your diet/lifestyle, inspiring yourself & others, embracing fruit & vegetables, nourishing your body with the foods that work for you, finding new ways to eat your favorite foods, and so. much. more. ” –Jenn from Peas and Crayons
Celebrate Food.  Celebrate blogging.  Celebrate Individuality.
So here is what I ate:

I know this looks pretty gross, but so yummy! I seriously look forward to this every weekday morning. Fage Nonfat greek yogurt with berries is THE best! Only yogurt I buy on a weekly basis. Then I add some oats..weird but delicious.

Mid Morning snack: Ezekiel bread with almond butter and some berries.

Lunch: broccoli, chicken and sweet potato. Looks a little boring, but believe it or not I haven’t gotten sick of it yet. I prepped on Sunday and made this same lunch for the whole week. Only takes about 20 mins and just grab and go on your way to work. Keeps me on track and accountable!

Sensible snacking! I bring these two items in my purse everywhere! Perfect for on-the-go.

Zucchini pizza. Oh boy. This is the first time making this and it exceeded expectations! Here’s what I did: Cut the zucchini in half then again on the bottom to create a flat surface. Brush with olive oil. Add toppings such as garlic, cheese, tomatoes and basil. Cook for 20-30 mins at 375. This is a MUST try! You will thank me later. 🙂

Apologize for the not-so-good photos. They were all taken with my iPhone.

Live Ultimate RUN San Francisco – looking for a 5k or quarter marathon in San Francisco? Join me June 30th!!

I totally went out on a limb this weekend. My friend invited me to join her running group, Run 365, for a 12 mile run! Yes, 12 miles. Holy cow I have not run that far in a long time! I was super nervous and honestly didn’t think I would make it. (Thank you for all the encouragement on the Facebook page!!) But…we made it! Finished at a 9:30 pace, which was one pace group ahead of ours. I couldn’t believe it, especially since I havent been running at all and spend all my time lifting. I guess lifting pays off! So what has this taught me? That my friend can successfully convince me to run a full marathon. Perhaps this year. And the saying mind over matter holds true! Running with a friend completely changes the way your mind works. We chatted the whole run and the time flew by! From this day forward, I will continue to run with a partner and not hold back or be intimidated by a huge task. Anything is possible and who knows, maybe there will be a full marathon in my future? 🙂

Check out Run 365 for a training team in the Bay Area, encouragement and a fun group to run with!

After my new-found, or should I say, again-found, interest in running, I entered the drawing to run the Nike Women’s Marathon San Francisco! Fingers crossed I get picked to run for my 3rd year in a row! Nike puts on an amazing event, and I sure hope I don’t miss it! But…I couldn’t commit to the full just quite yet…I think I need more time to sink in the fact that I would be running 26 miles! To enter into the random drawing follow this link.

Have you rekindled a long-lost passion lately? If so tell us about it! 🙂

Meet Health Coach Amanda Kelly & GIVEAWAY!

Today I am having Health Coach and friend, Amanda Kelly take over the blog! Here she is…

Aloha!! I am so excited to write a post for Jenna’s Fitness & the City! I have been following her since she started last year and I LOVE her blog.

My name is Amanda Kelly and I am a certified Holistic Health Coach.  I work with people to slowly incorporate healthy habits into their lives, so they can live a happier, fuller life (and get healthy!).  I love what I do and I adore talking nutrition, so I was psyched that Jenna offered a guest post to me! Woot woot!

Everyone wants to be happy and healthy.  For you ladies (and gents!), I made a quick list of easy-to-implement healthy habits that will make your skin glow and your body tight.  I don’t believe in a one-day overhaul of your health; it takes time to get totally on track!  These are simple, easy tips that you can slowly take on, one at a time.

1. Sleep at least 8 hours a night.  Everyone loves to sleep.  Give your body a much-needed break at night to restore itself.  There are so many benefits to getting enough sleep at night, including: WEIGHT LOSS, improved memory, increased life span, and improved performance at work and in real life (think exercise!).  Aside from all that, getting enough sleep will make you one hot lady! While you sleep, your skin repairs itself.  They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing!

2. Eat more color!! Include more dark greens, rich purple, orange, red, and white produce into your day.  Colorful produce has an array of vitamins and minerals, and you need every color of the rainbow to get each of those vitamins.  Try something new each week, like eggplant or mashed cauliflower. I have recently come to love purple cabbage in my salads!

3. Don’t skip meals.  EVER.  Eating should be your favorite thing in the world.  If you are eating all those colorful fruits and veggies, you should be able to eat until you are full without worrying about packing on the pounds.  It is seriously impossible to over-eat veggies.  Plus, if you are eating well, you will be feeling well!!

4. Check your labels.  Anything that doesn’t come from the produce aisle is likely to have some questionable ingredients.  If you can’t pronounce an ingredient, you probably shouldn’t eat it.  Just imagine all that gunk trying to break down into your body and get into your cells : Try whole foods, which are easier on your body.

5. Take your vitamins!! Although eating lots of fruits & veggies will get your gorgeous bod glowing with vitamins and minerals, you should still take a multivitamin daily.  It is a good back-up.  You want all that goodness in your body! I swear that I am happier when I take my vitamins.

6. Avoid GMO’s – just know that GMO’s have not been researched enough on humans to be deemed safe.  That does not sound appetizing! Stay away from anything made in a lab and you will be looking fab (Like my rhyme?).

7. Try organic.  This is one super easy way to increase your health and probably your lifespan.  Organics are so good and pure they make me want to jump for joy!  Do a little experiment, if you like.  Grab an organic apple and a non-organic apple from the store.  Take a bite of the conventional apple (after you pay for it) then take a bite of the organic apple.  Prepare to be blown away!  You will never want conventional produce again.

Little side note: I know organic is more expensive.  If you aren’t ready to go all-out organic, take a look at the dirty dozen list.  This is a list of foods that have been shown to carry the most pesticide residue.  You do NOT want to buy these in the conventional form.  There is also a list called the clean fifteen, which have the least amount of pesticide residue.  Google them!

8. Switch to all-natural products.  I’m talking skin care, toothpaste, body wash, household cleaners, you name it.  I have started using coconut oil on my face and hair. It’s amazing! Also, you can make a fab toner out of a little apple cider vinegar + water.  Plus, using natural products is less expensive than all those creams and face products. Yay!

9. Exercise!! I swear, you will get hooked on endorphins. Get fit AND get high! The easiest way to incorporate exercise into your life is to find something you like.  Try a Zumba class, Jazzercise, spin class, whatever.  Even long walks with friends count.  Try it! You can even start a little weight circuit – dumbbells are super fun.  Feel like a boss and get toned at the same time.  Weights are inexpensive (get some dumbbells at Target for less than $10) and there are TONS of free Youtube videos that show you weight circuits for any body part.  I am a huge fan of Tone It Up – these girls are fun AND know how to get toned!

10.  Slow down.  Take some time to relax!! I’m talking about doing something every day that makes you feel rested and well.  Take a long hot bubble bath.  Get a massage.  Read a novel.  Do something totally indulgent and feel good about it.  YOU should be your first priority.  Don’t feel bad about it either! When you take care of yourself, you are happier, healthier, and more of a joy to be around.

15 Things to Give Up

I hope everyone is having a great Wednesday! I love this list and just wanted to share a little something to think about.

I started my NCCPT Personal Training courses today so I’ve been studying like crazy! It’s a funny feeling being “back to school”, but I love this stuff and can’t wait to be certified and see where that leads me.

Have a great week! 🙂
