WHY YOU NEED TO USE A FOAM ROLLER

Ok were switching gears and talking fitness today! I just ran the Napa to Sonoma Half Marathon followed by the Giant Race Half Marathon a few weekends ago which was a total blast. Standard Jenna, I left training to the last minute and ran a ton of miles the last 2 weeks before the race. With all of the training and extra stress on the body its SUPER important to stretch, get a massage and FOAM ROLL.

While necessary to work hard during your workouts, it’s equally as important to make sure your body gets the recovery it needs. And while getting a massage every once in a while is a great way to treat yourself and soothe sore muscles, foam rolling is a much more time efficient way to recover on a daily basis.

Foam roller exercises, also called myofascial release, is a form of massage that you can do either before exercise to loosen up sore muscles and tight joints, or after a workout, in an effort to help with muscle recovery. I strongly believe foam rolling is ESSENTIAL after excess training, especially during half or full marathon training (or just everyday exercise!)

WHY YOU NEED TO USE A FOAM ROLLER:

Reduce soreness

Foam rolling works by massaging away fascia buildup in your muscles, which often lead to painful, sore muscles. Reducing this means you won’t have to skip your workout because you’re too sore from the previous day’s session. I like to foam roll right after a workout but the day after will do as well!

Increase mobility and flexibility

Taking proper care of underlying fascia is a secret weapon to improving mobility, flexibility, and range of motion. There are so many different ways to stretch, but I love using a foam roller to release tension and increase flexibility.

Helps De-stress

Foam rolling is basically a self massage. I usually get monthly deep tissue massages to help release tension and de-stress but this is a much more affordable way! When you release your knots and sore spots, the tension built up in your connective tissue releases and leaves you feeling less stressed.

A few tips that are important to consider:

Avoid foam rolling directly on an injured area. When it comes to foam rolling and myofascial release, constantly working the area of pain could create more inflammation and tension in the area, further tensing the muscles and fascia. Also, where you feel the pain is not always the source of the injury. Instead focus on the muscles attached to the area that injured- they could be the culprit.

Foam rolling hurts, and when I come to an area that is uncomfortable I tend to speed up. However foam rolling quickly doesnt help release fascia. Releasing fascia takes time, so slow your roll. 🙂

Foam rolling is a lot of work and I sometimes break a sweat. Although its easy to let our form deteriorate especially after a hard workout, its important to keep good form and posture. Your pelvis might drop from not having tight abs when doing quad work or your hips my sag while working the IT band. This can cause extra stress on existing injuries, so make sure you have enough energy to focus on posture.

I’m not going to lie….it hurts, but it is worth it, so hang in there, and notice how much better you feel when foam rolling becomes a consistent part of your recovery plan.

I cant stress enough the superior quality of the line. These leggings fit like a glove and they are so dang comfortable. They are not too tight, the material is not too thick, they are just right! This crop is something that I haven’t seen anywhere else which I was drawn to. There are so many activewear brands that are doing the same thing, but MICHI has items that are different. I love the open back, although you do have to wear this top with a sports bra. I would however where the black version without a bra if I was just lounging and not working out.

I am in love with all of the fashionable activewear pieces below! This bomber and this jacket are GORGEOUS! I really love their leggings and wear this olive green pair often. And can we talk about these sports bras and tops?! This off the shoulder is a fave for more of a “athleisure” look, and this bra and this bra are both insane!

FULL BODY WORKOUT WITH BASECAMP FITNESS

Most of you have gotten a sneak peak of this project I’ve been working on from my Instagram posts, but today I am excited to share my collaboration with Basecamp Fitness!

Basecamp Fitness is a workout focused on interval training at your highest intensity. Its a quick 35 minute class (LOVE!) which pushes your limits in one minute intervals alternating between strength and cardio. So you spend 60 seconds on a cardio bike aka “assault bike” which creates more resistance the faster you pedal. Then you hit the floor for 60 seconds of strength training. In this 60 seconds you use weights, kettle bells, medicine balls, resistance bands, TRX, whatever the exercise calls for. The workout always ends with an optional 10 minutes of abs, but who would skip out on a little ab work!?

When you walk into Basecamp Fitness, you are greeted by the most friendly staff who gets you signed in and lets you know what bike you are starting on. There is an instructor in each class, but there is also a monitor which keeps track of time and also shows you which exercise is up and also demonstrates what the exercise looks like. There are 4 groups, so everyone in class is on a different exercise, or on the bike each minute. Each day of the week is different and focuses on a different muscle group and type of exercise. There are so many to choose from, all of which will leave you sweating and feeling accomplished.

I love that Basecamp really makes you feel like you are in a welcoming environment which I have found hard to find these days. They are so supportive and really want to help you reach your goals. If you pedal your heart out and reach 5 miles on the bike, you are awarded with a special shirt. If you attend 10 classes in a month or and if you reach your personal fitness goal, you are awarded as well. The environment here really makes you want to come back and spend more time at the studio. I am addicted!

Ok, now for the workout! Sharing a Basecamp inspired workout, with a twist. This is similar to something you will see in class, but something I put together for you guys to try on your own if you dont have a Basecamp Fitness in your area. This workout will train all major body parts and take 30 minutes for 2 rounds. You can do this workout anywhere that you have equipment. I am demonstrating most of the moves below.

BASECAMP INSPIRED FULL BODY WORKOUT:

1 min high intensity cardio – You can use a bike, treadmill, run outside, whatever will get your heart rate up. Just made sure it is high intensity!

1 min resistance band rows

1 min high intensity cardio

1 min bicep curls with dumbbells

1 min high intensity cardio

1 min squat to shoulder press with dumbbells

1 min high intensity cardio

1 min barbell squats

1 min high intensity cardio

1 min standing military press with barbell

1 min high intensity cardio

1 min medicine ball throw downs

1 min high intensity cardio

1 min mountain climber

1 min high intensity cardio

1 min side plank – 30 seconds each side

Repeat 2-3 times

A quick switch between high intensity cardio and strength training is the best way to reach your goals. Even when I am not in class, I make sure to mimic this idea at the gym on my own. The Basecamp workout is quick, effective and makes you stay focused. I love the fact that the class is only 35 minutes, but with each class I feel stronger and faster. Basecamp is always challenging me whether it be with balance, endurance or strength. They make it fun to move and sweat! Like I have said before, I am addicted AND seeing results!

EYELET JUMPSUIT / UFORIA FITNESS STUDIO

Hope you all had a fabulous Memorial Day weekend! We kept it local but managed to stay pretty active! We went on a hike with friends in the Marin Headlands, got our sweat on at the gym and also checked out a few new (to me) fitness studios.

On Saturday, Uforia Studios invited me to take a GRIT class. It was my first time to the studio (over on Polk street in San Francisco) and I’m so glad I checked it out! GRIT is their strength training classs which combines both cardio and conditioning. The difference between this class and any other studio I’ve been to is that they dont focus on reps, but focus on moving to the beat of the music. It makes it more fun, and I definitely moved much faster then normal. Each teacher has a different routine, but my class was a combination of cardio on and off a wood box, with some very quick reps with weights focusing on the full body. I was definitely sweating and very sore the next day, all signs of a great workout! It was challenging to me, and also nice to not focus so much on lifting heavy weights, but focusing on more reps and having fun with the music.

Uforia Studios also has a hip hop dance class (next on my list!) and a spin class classed Revolutions. Uforia is a combination of high energy, music driven fitness class with loud music and focus on moving with beat of the music. The classes are fun and affordable, I highly recommended you check them out if you are in the San Francisco area!

I was planning to run home from Uforia, but I decided that I was wayyyy to tired from my class! (Doesnt happen often, so you know if was a good one!) So instead of running, I walked and found a gem of a cycling studio on my way. Pelo Fitness caught my eye from the huge modern building and bright orange sign. I decided to stop in to check it out and met the owner Alan, who gave me a mini tour and talked to me about his goals for the studio. Pelo Fitness has been open in SF since the beginning of the year, and will be expanding into strength training and yoga classes within the next few months. I absolutely LOVED the vibe of the studio. It was super chic and modern, and the actual spin studio looks like a theater with one of the best sound systems I’ve heard. Pelo is about making connections with people, hanging out in the studio after class, and different from most cycling classes, you can see what level of effort you are putting into your ride depending on your fitness level. I’m going back for a class this week and cant wait!

Anyways, onto the fashion portion of this post! Today I’m sharing  this eyelet jumpsuit I’ve worn out quite a bit recently. I took it on a work trip to Mexico, and have also been wearing it out quite a bit around the city.  Jumpsuits are so effortless, and the eyelet design on this one is just gorgeous.

APRIL FAVORITES

Hope you guys are having a great weekend and Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mamas! I have had this post ready for awhile but haven’t had a chance to finish it until now. So I’m a wee bit late but still wanted to share some goodies that I have been loving in the month of April. Below are a few of my favorite things at the moment…

  1. RX Bar: These are the best bars on the market (in my opinion)! I have an RX Bar in my bag at all times, and when traveling I have multiple in my bag. There are few ingredients in these bars which are listed on the front of the package and they all taste so good. They dont taste like your average protein bar, but like actual un-processed ingredients. My favorite flavor is the chocoloate sea salt and coffee chocolate. So glad I’ve found these!
  2. Kopari Coconut Melt: I recently picked this up from Sephora just for the sole fact that there are soooo many uses for coconut oil. You can always buy coconut oil from a grocery store which serves the same purpose without the fancy packaging but I’ve fallen in love with this Kopari Coconut Melt. I love the smell of coconut and I also am very dry (skin, hair etc) and this product is life changing. Its a solid coconut oil that melts in your hands and I’ve used it both on my face for added moisture, skin as an all over moisturizer and in my hair. I apply to my hair at night, sleep on it then wash it out in the morning. After a wash, my hair is silky smooth and no longer dry. I highly recommend coconut oil for multiple uses!
  3. Nike Pro Sports Bra: I love this sports bra for almost all activity. It is light to medium support, super comfortable and the quality of all Nike sports bras is the best in my opinion. You can read my last post about how to find the perfect sports bra here.
  4. Nike Air Max Thea Ultra Flyknit Sneakers: I picked up these sneaks a few weeks ago and they are so dang comfortable that I haven’t been wearing any other pair! I don’t necessarily like these for running as I need more support, but I love for cross training, gym, and everyday wear. Nike keeps getting better and better at their sneaker game.
  5. Vans Sk8 Hi Slim Sneaker: I recently picked up a pair of these high top vans and fell in love. I’ve been wearing them this month a lot more then I thought I would. When I wear sneakers I almost always go for my Nikes, but these are so cute and go with everything. Highly recommend picking up a pair of these high tops!
  6. Lilybod Zoe Legging: I just came across this brand and love their products. I was sent a pair of leggings and have been wearing them nonstop. Full post to come regarding these bad boys, but I wanted to get them on your radar sooner then later. They are that good!
  7. Alo Yoga Airbrush Camo Capris: These are perfect for spring althleisure fashion. Camo is a no brainer for me, and love the white and grey for a light and airy look for spring. I wear these to yoga, gym and out and about. They are super comfortable and love the crop. Alo Yoga is another one of my favorite brands at the moment and always find myself attracted to their style.
  8. Marc Jacobs Beauty Glow Stick: I love this product! I use it every single day. It is such a great luminizer for a beautiful dewy glow. I like to warm the product up in my hands and pat on the high points of my face. I also have been using all over the body and think its such a beautiful shade of silver and gold. My favorite luminizer on the market!
  9. Marc Jacobs Beauty Enamored Gloss: These glosses are the best (and I’ve tried quite a few). They come in such beautiful shades, are not sticky and and have a nice minty scent. I love a glossy lip and always have a few shades of the Marc Jacobs gloss in each purse. My favorite shades are sugar sugar, pretty thing, skin deep and allow me.
  10. Marysia Swimsuit: I have been on the hunt for a new swimsuit for quite some time and when this one came in the mail I fell in love! The scallop detail, the one shoulder and the color was the perfect combo for me. Now I just need to book a tropical vacation!
  11. Schutz Enida Heel: I bought these last year and have proved to be a great purchase. They are perfect for spring and summer, comfortable and will be wearing these bad boys for many seasons to come.
  12. Calvin Klein Modern Cotton Bralette: These are the most comfortable sports bras I own. I also love the bottoms that come with these as a set. I just went to Nordstroms and bought a more colors and cant get enough.
  13. Halo Top: My brother introduced me to Halo Top this past month and ever since my first taste I always find the need to pick some up at the grocery store. The main selling point for me is the nutrition. Most flavors are close to 280 calories for the whole pint. They also taste delicious! I try not to eat the entire pint in one sitting, but you know how that is…
  14. American Needle Washed Cotton Baseball hat: I love throwing a baseball hat on when having a dirty hair day (which is often)! This simple black hat has been my go to on runs, to the gym and running errands on the weekends. Definitely a staple for me.
