Meet Lisa Corsello of Burn / Top 5 Reasons to Circuit Train

Hey everyone! I was recently invited to attend a Burn pilates class here in San Francisco, and LOVED it! It’s not your ordinary pilates class, but super high intensity circuit training involving both strength training, cardio and much more. This class kicked my butt (in a good way) and I cant wait to go back! So excited to introduce you all to Lisa who is the owner AND founder of Burn. This woman does it all and is such an inspiration to me. She will also give us the top 5 reasons why circuit training is so important to include in your workout regime. Here she is:

Top 5 Reasons to Circuit Train

By Lisa Corsello, owner and found of Burn

Circuit training, put very simply, is all about doing a variety of exercises with a relatively short amount of time in between each set.  Circuits can be done just about anywhere, with just about any combo of exercises.  Not sold yet? Read on for the Top 5 Reasons To Circuit Train.  I guarantee once you try it you’ll agree. . . . .

1.  Efficiency:  If you’re looking to get the most out of your workout time, circuit training is the best example of quality over quantity.  Moving from one circuit to another keeps the heart rate up and helps increase endurance due to the lack of rest time and the different challenges presented by each exercise.

2.  Work Harder: Because each exercise in a circuit is performed for a relatively short amount of time, it’s harder to get bored.  Think about it- if you know you’ll be on a spin bike for an hour, how likely are you to challenge yourself the entire time?  If you know you’ll be on the spin bike for 3 minutes and then onto something totally different, you are more likely to push harder on the bike.

3.  Reduce chance of injury:  Because circuits are designed to incorporate many different exercise techniques, the body becomes not only stronger, but better able to take on stress.  By training the entire body in many different ways, circuits help create a better overall fitness foundation and level of body awareness that can help reduce injuries in and out of the gym.

4.  Burn more calories:  Circuits work the entire body, which results in more calorie burn during and after the workout.  The after– burn differs, depending on the person, but studies show that the resting metabolic rate remains elevated after a workout and long-term as more lean body mass is achieved. In other words, you keep burning calories, even after your workout.

5.  Break through plateaus:  Plateaus can be caused by the body’s adaptation to a workout.  What was once challenging gets easier over time, if done consistently. Circuit training, therefore, helps keep plateaus at bay by offering a variety of different movements to keep the body focused and working.

Google top circuit workouts and follow the high-intensity exercises, without pausing, three times through, at least three days a week, and you’ll be showing off a sleeker body by the end of the month.

If you are in the Bay Area and prefer group circuit exercise, come to one of my classes at Burn in San Francisco and torch a few calories. See schedule at www.burnsf.com

Homemade Almond Butter / New Etsy Find

Hope you had a terrific Labor Day weekend! We spent the weekend in Sonoma visiting my parents, soaking up the sun and relaxing. While there, my mom and I decided to make homemade almond butter. I don’t think you guys understand how easy it is to make. Why buy it at the store when making your own is SO simple and nutritious!

DIRECTIONS: put your almonds in a food processor and let it run. That’s it, seriously! After 1 minute your almonds will start to resemble almond meal. They will then start to build up on the side, so every 2-3 minutes you will want to stop and push the almonds down before continuing. After a couple minutes the almonds will start to get clumpy and sticky. This is when they finally start to release their oils. After 10-12 minutes your almonds will then resemble almond butter, but don’t stop there! After a couple more minutes of processing your almond butter will magically release more oils and become creamy and smooth. Add a pinch of sea salt if you wish and give it one last swirl. Easy, right?!

I had mine with some pears, while the fam enjoyed some it on some whole wheat bread. My fave is toasting a piece of Ezekiel bread with a spread of almond butter on the top and enjoying while warm. Remember, almonds are a “good fat” and should be included in your diet. Peanut butter is much higher in fat therefore I personally prefer almond butter to peanut butter. 🙂

What I Ate Wednesday / Grocery Shopping Tip

I am linking up for another What I ate Wednesday! Hopefully this gives you guys some ideas of what I eat, as I am constantly looking for new meal recipes! Head over to Peas and Crayons for more clean eating ideas! She makes master pieces over there, where as my cooking skills are slowly but surely progressing. These pics are lacking veggies which I ate but are not pictured, so here is the gist of my meals:

Breakfast: post workout protein shake with my fave yogurt. Fage Total 0% greek yogurt is my go-to. I buy at least 5/week, love!

Lunch: I bought this chicken pre-packaged at Trader Joes. These are SO good! This one is a lemon flavor, but they have plenty others also. I usually shop on Sundays or Mondays and prepare my meals for the week. My lunch will look very similar to this all week.

A little peak into my desk drawer at work…full of Quest Bars! The perfect afternoon snack. This is my fave flavor also! YUM!

Dinner: Egg whites, extra lean chicken sausage and tomatoes for me, cheese for my boyfriend. We almost always eat the same dinner, just different variations. (It’s not the prettiest pic but this is reality) 🙂

Dark chocolate after dinner is my guilty pleasure…alright secrets out. I just discovered this new store here in SF called New Tree. Its more of a coffee shop but they make these delicious chocolates!

Have you guys seen the show Extreme Weightloss? I am obsessed! It is so educational and the stories very inspiring. One take-away from the show: shop the outside of the aisles in the grocery store. Everything you need is on the outer parts of the store. No need to go within the aisles. This is SO true and one of the best grocery shopping tips. Also, the junk is right in front of you, you must search for the healthy items. This reality is unfortunate, but go with a list and search for the items you need instead of spur of the moment shopping which often leads to buying more unhealthy items.

Head to Rocco Dispirito’s website and check out his healthy cookbooks. I am so anxious to try his recipes. Let me know what you think!

Barbie’s New Look – What Do You Think?

Did you play with Barbie as a kid? I was probably her biggest fan and carried her absolutely everywhere! There has always been that debate about her body type and whether or not it creates the incorrect body image for young girls. It’s pretty interesting to hear either side.

I came across this article from a Pennsylvania researcher and artist Nickolay Lamm“What would Barbie look like as an average woman.” Using measurements of an average 19 year old girl, Nickolay created this 3D model and compared directly with Barbie. I wanted to share the images with you.

Barbie-2-761x1024

Barbie-1-768x1024

(It looks like Barbie finally squats!! ;))

First and foremost, I don’t believe in criticizing any body type, shape or form. It is important to live a healthy lifestyle and take care of your skin, body and well-being, no matter what shape that may be. We all have different ideas of “the perfect body” and should never criticize or look at someone differently because of their shape. We need to learn to be comfortable and confident in our own skin and that’s what matters most.

Lets discuss! What are your thoughts on Barbie’s makeover to reflect the average woman?

Do you think Mattel’s view of Barbie gives an unrealistic image for young girls? Do you think they should produce this version of the “real” person? Let me know if the comments!

Portion Size / Live Ultimate Run

Happy Friday! Hope you all had a great week!  It’s a never-ending battle with me to get my portions correct, so I thought this chart would be a huge help not only to you guys, but myself included.  These portions look teeny tiny but keep in mind you should be eating 5-6 small meals a day! This is a HUGE issue when going out to restaurants. Most places load up the portions, leaving you the option to finish the whole thing. My personal advice: take half home with you! No need to be overly stuffed. This will only eliminate the “6 meals a day” theory.

So keep it small. Keep it simple and enjoy!

Do you guys think that our portions are too large here in America compared to other countries?
