FITNESS SERIES: LEGS & GLUTES WITH BAY CLUBS

Between birthdays and vacations I have been so off track with my nutrition and workouts, so I’ve been trying to get back into the swing of things. Once I get back on track its no problem for me to go to the gym or get a workout in, but its getting to that point which is a struggle for me!

Bay Clubs just introduced a new group fitness class called IGNITE which I have been going to and LOVING! Ignite is a mix of high intensity cardio and weight training. These leggings above are one of my favorite leggings I’ve tried. The material is so soft, and comfortable, the quality is really amazing. #UPFORANYTHING CHALLENGE WITH ATHLETA

I am so excited to kick off the new year with a fitness campaign! Athleta has been one of my favorite activewear brands for years now so I immediately accepted the challenge when they nominated me to be a part of their #UPFORANYTHING campaign. Athleta’s goal for the #UPFORANYTHING challenge is to push women out of their comfort zone in our new #UPFORANYTHING gear and take a fitness class that we’ve always dreamed of taking- or maybe a class that we’ve needed that extra push to take.

Challenge accepted! I grabbed my partner in crime Amira, and we decided to take a boxing class! I’ve wanted to get into boxing for years now, but have never pulled the trigger. I figured it would get me out of my comfort zone, and regular routine of running and/or weightlifting, and that it did!

Athleta sent us all the gear we needed to take our first boxing class: Up For Anything Tights, All in Bras, Essence Tie Back Tanks, and a Swell water bottle.

Armed and ready, Amira and I headed to Pilates Pro Works in San Francisco to take their MatBox class. I’ve been meaning to take this class forever and I’m so glad we did! The class started with a cardio warmup including jumping jacks, burpees, pushups and more to get our heart rate going. Then we got to high intensity boxing and kickboxing with a punching bag where we did rounds of different sets. Amira and I shared a bag and had so much fun letting loose and going for it! Then the gloves came off and we did a few light weight training moves and ended with a yoga sequence. I absolutely LOVED the variety in this class! Ending with yoga seemed to be the perfect cool down to what was a very intense class. And not to mention, it was such a great workout and a great way to get out any extra tension. My hands were sore, but my adrenaline took over!

The Up for Anything tights were perfect for class. They are made from a sculptek light fabric for the perfect combination of movement and support. They are so so comfortable, have a high waist band which hugs in all of the right places, and also have four convenient pockets which I love. Athleta sports bras have always been my all time favorite, and this All in Bra is no different. It provides such great support and just fits so well. If you are in the market for new tights and bra, these two are it!

Athleta’s mission is to ignite a community of active, healthy and confident women who empower each other to realize their limitless potential. This campaign did just that. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to participate in Athleta’s mission and get out of my comfort zone to try something new. I am now obsessed with boxing and will be adding to my routine go forward.

Now its your turn to push yourself to try something new! Pick a class that you have never taken before, grab and friend and go for it! xo

*Thank you Athleta for sponsoring this post. As always, all opinions are my own.

WHY YOU NEED TO USE A FOAM ROLLER

Ok were switching gears and talking fitness today! I just ran the Napa to Sonoma Half Marathon followed by the Giant Race Half Marathon a few weekends ago which was a total blast. Standard Jenna, I left training to the last minute and ran a ton of miles the last 2 weeks before the race. With all of the training and extra stress on the body its SUPER important to stretch, get a massage and FOAM ROLL.

While necessary to work hard during your workouts, it’s equally as important to make sure your body gets the recovery it needs. And while getting a massage every once in a while is a great way to treat yourself and soothe sore muscles, foam rolling is a much more time efficient way to recover on a daily basis.

Foam roller exercises, also called myofascial release, is a form of massage that you can do either before exercise to loosen up sore muscles and tight joints, or after a workout, in an effort to help with muscle recovery. I strongly believe foam rolling is ESSENTIAL after excess training, especially during half or full marathon training (or just everyday exercise!)

WHY YOU NEED TO USE A FOAM ROLLER:

Reduce soreness

Foam rolling works by massaging away fascia buildup in your muscles, which often lead to painful, sore muscles. Reducing this means you won’t have to skip your workout because you’re too sore from the previous day’s session. I like to foam roll right after a workout but the day after will do as well!

Increase mobility and flexibility

Taking proper care of underlying fascia is a secret weapon to improving mobility, flexibility, and range of motion. There are so many different ways to stretch, but I love using a foam roller to release tension and increase flexibility.

Helps De-stress

Foam rolling is basically a self massage. I usually get monthly deep tissue massages to help release tension and de-stress but this is a much more affordable way! When you release your knots and sore spots, the tension built up in your connective tissue releases and leaves you feeling less stressed.

A few tips that are important to consider:

Avoid foam rolling directly on an injured area. When it comes to foam rolling and myofascial release, constantly working the area of pain could create more inflammation and tension in the area, further tensing the muscles and fascia. Also, where you feel the pain is not always the source of the injury. Instead focus on the muscles attached to the area that injured- they could be the culprit.

Foam rolling hurts, and when I come to an area that is uncomfortable I tend to speed up. However foam rolling quickly doesnt help release fascia. Releasing fascia takes time, so slow your roll. 🙂

Foam rolling is a lot of work and I sometimes break a sweat. Although its easy to let our form deteriorate especially after a hard workout, its important to keep good form and posture. Your pelvis might drop from not having tight abs when doing quad work or your hips my sag while working the IT band. This can cause extra stress on existing injuries, so make sure you have enough energy to focus on posture.

I’m not going to lie….it hurts, but it is worth it, so hang in there, and notice how much better you feel when foam rolling becomes a consistent part of your recovery plan.

FULL BODY WORKOUT WITH BASECAMP FITNESS

Most of you have gotten a sneak peak of this project I’ve been working on from my Instagram posts, but today I am excited to share my collaboration with Basecamp Fitness!

Basecamp Fitness is a workout focused on interval training at your highest intensity. Its a quick 35 minute class (LOVE!) which pushes your limits in one minute intervals alternating between strength and cardio. So you spend 60 seconds on a cardio bike aka “assault bike” which creates more resistance the faster you pedal. Then you hit the floor for 60 seconds of strength training. In this 60 seconds you use weights, kettle bells, medicine balls, resistance bands, TRX, whatever the exercise calls for. The workout always ends with an optional 10 minutes of abs, but who would skip out on a little ab work!?

When you walk into Basecamp Fitness, you are greeted by the most friendly staff who gets you signed in and lets you know what bike you are starting on. There is an instructor in each class, but there is also a monitor which keeps track of time and also shows you which exercise is up and also demonstrates what the exercise looks like. There are 4 groups, so everyone in class is on a different exercise, or on the bike each minute. Each day of the week is different and focuses on a different muscle group and type of exercise. There are so many to choose from, all of which will leave you sweating and feeling accomplished.

OUTFIT DETAILS: ALALA JACKET / LULULEMON TANK / LULULEMON SPORTS BRA / LULULEMON TIGHTS / NIKE SNEAKERS

Basecamp Fitness is located only in California (for now) in San Francisco, Burlingame, Santa Monica, Pasadena and West Hollywood. Check their website here for locations. Special shout out to the San Francisco Basecamp gang- thank you for being so supportive and kind, you guys are the best!

I love that Basecamp really makes you feel like you are in a welcoming environment which I have found hard to find these days. They are so supportive and really want to help you reach your goals. If you pedal your heart out and reach 5 miles on the bike, you are awarded with a special shirt. If you attend 10 classes in a month or and if you reach your personal fitness goal, you are awarded as well. The environment here really makes you want to come back and spend more time at the studio. I am addicted!

Ok, now for the workout! Sharing a Basecamp inspired workout, with a twist. This is similar to something you will see in class, but something I put together for you guys to try on your own if you dont have a Basecamp Fitness in your area. A quick switch between high intensity cardio and strength training is the best way to reach your goals. Even when I am not in class, I make sure to mimic this idea at the gym on my own. The Basecamp workout is quick, effective and makes you stay focused. I love the fact that the class is only 35 minutes, but with each class I feel stronger and faster. Basecamp is always challenging me whether it be with balance, endurance or strength. They make it fun to move and sweat! Like I have said before, I am addicted AND seeing results!

If you are in the area, come workout with me! I have been posting on my Instagram ahead of time with the dates and times of classes I have been attending and would love to see you there! Your first class is always free, just be sure to tell them that I sent you!
